Why Get Better?

Thinking About Self-Improvement
When we think about self-improvement, we think about many different areas in which we could improve. The first thing that usually comes to mind are topics like education, health, relationships, employment, and finances. No doubt there are many other areas for self-improvement; however, these seem to be the most talked about. Thinking about self-improvement makes me wonder why get better? If you are enjoying life and you are happy, perhaps you achieved something that eludes most everyone, you don’t need an answer to this question. However, if you are like everyone else, there is a good chance that you will have an area in your life that you wish to improve.
Humans have been created for individual achievement and success. We have an inner desire that drives us to do better. Competitiveness is in our DNA. Sure, it is possible to be happy with where we are at certain points in our lives. However, when an opportunity to improve or achieve something better comes along, it will ignite a flame in our inner spirit that drives us to reach our full potential.
Why Get Better?
So, why get better? I believe that the reason that people as a whole strive to get better is that the end result contributes to the betterment of society. The journey that we take while improving ourselves is one that affects most everyone in our lives. In addition to making things better around us, we are also rewarded by the person that we become.
Suppose for example that you attend college and obtain a four-year degree in any subject. Do you think that you would just keep all of your newly found knowledge to yourself? Probably not. It is likely that you will share your knowledge with others and provide value to society as a whole. Even if you received a degree in a not so popular subject, you will have developed skills and knowledge that make you more valuable to society.
What if you take another route and don’t go to college? You work hard and multiply your income by ten through knowledge and experience. Once again, you will provide more value to society because you will likely share your experience and knowledge. You will set an example for others and you will probably spend and give more to your community. The answer to why you should improve yourself is that it will bring great satisfaction to you and make your world a better place.
